[edit] Version 3: For Rooms With Normal Lighting (firmware 1003.M) - Updated 7.26.08
Link to original thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=14348269&postcount=898 (check there for updated changes) Verson #3: Intro: Everyone wants the whitest whites and the blackest blacks but at what cost? Unless you're willing to sacrifice colors, details, shadows and experience black crush it's never recommended to set extreme values for the Brightness and Contrast. Adjust them with diligence and caution. The settings below are specific for my 2nd 650 and environment. If you choose to try them you may find the need to adjust the settings to suit your 650 and environment. Calibrations for Firmware: 1003.M + For standard DVD upconverted 1080i (should work with Blu-ray/HD DVDs too). ++ For rooms with normal lighting (I use 60 and 100 watt bulbs in a controlled environment). NOT recommended for dark rooms. Calibration Name: Less Is Better (w/concentration on Grayscale) Picture ------- Mode: Movie Backlight: 5 Contrast: 82 Brightness: 48 (Pluge accurate for my lighting type; your lighting type might be different.) Observations After Calibration (for A650 #2): 1. Grayscale adjusted for a lighted environment. *I'm quite pleased how the end result turned out. For more information on the importance of Grayscale proceed to the Calibration forum. Must be understood: 1. Backlight, Contrast, Brightness and Gamma interact with one another. If you decide to change any of these, whether it's just one or all of these settings you may need to adjust the others. ------------------ (Optional) Service Menu Settings: --------------------------------- Film Judder Off = 32 Film Low (all 4) = 15 <-- sweet spot setting (in effect when AMP is set to Low) Film Medi (all 4) = 11 Film High (all 4) = 7

The best Xbox 360 settings for use on a samsung HDTV...
For Xbox 360 if you want the image quality to look outstanding, NO COMBINATIONS OF SETTINGS BESIDES THESE ARE CORRECT, it is the only way to use RGB colorspace with 360 and a Sammy LCD, giving you rich colors, great black levels, and accurate shadow detail:
ON YOUR 360: -Plug your 360 into HDMI 1 -Set the reference level on the purple tab to "Expanded"
ON YOUR SAMSUNG LCD: -Label HDMI 1 "PC" on the "inputs" tab along the left side of your TV menu -Go to picture settings and reset them (last option), then use the following settings:
Picture mode: Movie Backlight: 6 Contrast: 84 Brightness: 44 Sharpness: Greyed out Color: Greyed out Tint: 50/50 (may be greyed out) HDMI Black Level: Normal (may be greyed out) Black Adjust: Off Dynamic Contrast: Medium Gamma: 0 Color Tone: Normal... with the 360 we are not wanting it to be 6500k we want to keep whites white and normal does this. Color Space: Auto Home Theatre PC mode: On (this tells the TV to look for true RGB) DNIE: On (may be greyed out) DNR: off White levels: Default color levels: Default
You may have to power cycle your TV, but I found resetting your picture settings had the same effect, but the important things to note are:
-HDMI 1 is named PC -Home Theatre PC "ON" (and NOT greyed out anymore) -Xbox 360 reference levels Expanded -some options get greyed out when correctly activated (sharpness, etc.)
THE 3 ABOVE ARE CRUCIAL.
I am confident I am correct, and you will immediately notice how amazing the picture is, no compromises.
Nothing else is true RGB.
